Tim was born to parents of mixed descent, so is of part-Irish and Italian ancestry, but his parents divorced when he was a child so he was raised by his mother. He attended John F. Kennedy High School where he distinguished himself as a good football player, so was eventually recruited to play at Youngstown State University. Unfortunately, Tim suffered from a knee injury which ended his career in sports and he then moved to Bowling Green State University, from where he graduated with a BA degree in political science in 1995.
Tim then joined Congressman Jim Traficant’s staff, but meantime continued his studies and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 2000. He served half a term in the Ohio State Senate from 2000 after Traficant was disbarred, then in 2002 he became a candidate for the 17th District at the next full election, and defeated his opponent T. Sawyer, and in January 2003 when he actually entered office, he was 29 years old which made him the youngest Democrat in the House. However, this was not a notable disadvantage, as he has subsequently been re-elected seven times, the last three for the 17th district, winning with comfortable majorities each time.
Ryan’s political engagements have included Making America Competitive Again, and Restoring US Innovation Leadership, and he was subsequently a part of the “30 Something” Working Group, a congressional caucus which gathers US House of Representatives members who are Democrats and under the age of 40. Tim introduced the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act in 2010, also stating that tax increases on small businesses were necessary due to big deficits that same year. In 2016 he took part in a rally supporting Hillary Clinton in the US Presidential contest, then in November 2016 Ryan started a campaign to replace Nancy Pelosi as Democrat House Minority Leader following the 2016 presidential election, but was defeated.
In addition to his political career, in 2012 he published a book about practicing mindfulness in all aspects of life. His second book – “The Real Food Revolution” – came out in 2014.
When it comes to his personal life, Tim has been married to school teacher Andrea Zetts since 2013, and the couple has a son, and Ryan is stepfather to two children from Zetts’ previous relationship. The family is based in Howland, Ohio.
