Tim is the son of Ronald Chapman and his wife Diane Wimberly, who both worked in bail bonds. His parents divorced when he was only two and a half years old, and together with his brother he lived with his paternal grandparents for two years. He soon joined the family business, and while there met and befriended Duane “Dog” Chapman; the two aren’t related.
