He attended Carlynton High School, where he excelled in American Football, basketball and track. Upon matriculation, he enrolled into North Carolina State University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1979. During his time there, he played in the position of a linebacker for the college team and was eventually promoted to be team captain, and was named team MVP in his senior year.

Playing Career

Bill Cowher’s professional playing career started in 1979, when he joined the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL), but played with them for just a single season and then signed with the Cleveland Browns. He spent three seasons there from through 1982, when he was traded back to the Eagles, and played two more years before he retired from playing and became a coach. Most of his playing career Bill spent in special terms.

Coaching Career

He launched his coaching career in 1985 when he was 28 years old, under Marty Schottenheimer with the Cleveland Browns.


He was initially the special team’s coach, and was later promoted to be the secondary coach in the 1987-1988 season. He then followed Schottenheimer to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he served as a defensive co-ordinator from 1989 until 1991. In the following year, he was hired to work in the position of the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming the 15th head coach in the history of the team after succeeding Chuck Noll but only the second head coach since the 1970 NFL merger.

He spent 15 seasons with the team, and under his tenure, the Steelers won six division titles, and he’s also one of only six coaches in the history of the NFL to claim at least seven division titles.

They also captured six AFC Divisional Championships (1994, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2005) and two AFC Championships (1995 and 2005). In 1995 at the age of 38, Bill led the team to a Super Bowl, becoming the youngest coach to do that. His team won Super Bowl XL in 2006 after they defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21–10. Under him, the Steelers also played in 21 play-off games. He also won two Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year (1992 and 2004), an AP NFL Coach of the Year award (1992), and Best Coach/Manager ESPY Award (2006). In 2007, he resigned and was succeeded by Mike Tomlin – he was inducted into the Pittsburgh Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

Since 2007, Bill Cowher has served as a studio sports analyst for the CBS program “The NFL Today”. He also made an appearance in the ABC reality show “Fast Cars And Superstars: The Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race” in 2007.
