Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner was born on 2 October 1951, in Wallsend, Tyne & Wear England. As Sting, he is a multi-instrumentalist musician, songwriter, singer and philanthropist who has millions of fans all over the world, who first became popular as a member of English rock band “The Police”.

So how rich is Sting? Sources estimate his current net worth to be a truly impressive amount of $300 million. It is interesting that his net worth has risen the most not during his years in The Police or the solo years after that, but after the singer and producer P. Diddy released a remix of Sting’s song “Every Breath You Take”. P. Diddy didn’t ask for permission to use parts of the song and Sting was able to earn 100% of the profit as the only composer. For the last few years, Sting has been earning $730, 000 each year just from the royalties of that song.

Sting’s career as a musician took off only later in his life, when he attended the Northern Counties College of Education in 1974. Despite that, he had been a music fan, and would go to the “Club A Go-Go” nightclub to see such musicians as Manfred Mann and rock trio Cream when he was a teenager and those bands have contributed to Sting’s own approach to music. At first he started to perform jazz with the Phoenix Jazzmen, at that time earning his nickname and stage name ‘Sting’ from his habit of wearing a sweater with black and yellow hooped stripes, looking like a bee. While even then people noticed that he was good, Sting only became famous when he, Henry Padovani (guitarist who was later replaced by Andy Summers) and Stewart Copeland (drummer) formed the rock band The Police in 1977, with Sting as a songwriter, main vocalist and bassist. In just five years the band became known UK-wide, and have won five Grammy Awards. The group’s sound evolved from slightly punk, to more reggae and then pop melodies. The Police split up in 1983, but still remained popular for years to come. A few acknowledgments that reveal just how successful and important the band was are their inclusion in The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s list of “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll” and Rolling Stone’s list of “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

Having built a reputation, fame and a solid foundation for his growing net worth in The Police, Sting became extremely successful in his own solo career, which continued for more than 30 years, and Sting has now sold more than 100 million album copies to his fans all over the world. Overall, Sting has received 17 Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and has been nominated for three Academy Awards and 21 Grammy Awards. However, the most telling and impressive award Sting has received was a Kennedy Center Honors for “Lifetime Contribution” in 2014.

In his personal life, Sting had been married twice, firstly to actress Frances Tomelty (1976-84) and together they raised two children. Sting has been married to film producer and actress Trudie Styler since 1992, and together they have four children. Sting is heavily involved in human rights, through Amnesty International.
