Steven Lawrence, born Sidney Liebowitz on the 8th of July 1935, is an American actor and singer who became famous for being one half of the singing duo “Steve and Eydie”, together with his wife Eydie Gorme. He also became known for his chart-topping hits in the ‘50s, and his acting career.

Born in Brooklyn, New York City, Lawrence is from Jewish parents; his father, Victor was a baker and managed his own bakery together with his wife, Helen. Steve attended Thomas Jefferson High School and later enlisted into the army. During his time of service in the Army, Lawrence singing career started when he became the official vocal soloist of “Pershing’s Own” along with The United States Army Band, stationed in Washington, D.C.

After completing his service, Lawrence his love for music continued, and he performed in night clubs and television shows. Together with his wife Eydie – married 1957 – the two formed “Steve and Eydie”, and produced a string of hits during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, including “Pretty Blue Eyes”, “Go Away Little Girl”, “Footsteps”, and “Party Doll”. His singing helped establish his popularity and net worth.

While being a singer, Lawrence also ventured into acting. During the ‘60’s he appeared in shows including “The Judy Garland Show”, “The Danny Kaye Show”, “The Julie Andrews Hour”, “The Carol Burnett Show” and “The Flip Wilson” mostly singing, but also acting in “Night Gallery”, “Murder”, “Police Story”, “CSI” and “Gilmore Girls”. He also had his own variety show at one time entitled “The Steve Lawrence Show”. His career in acting also helped in tremendously in raising his wealth.

Lawrence also appeared in Broadway with his wife in the musical “Golden Rainbow”. Although the production was not a big success, it produced one of their most memorable songs entitled “I’ve Gotta Be Me”.

Later, Lawrence continued in his acting career, and appeared in movies like “Stand Up and Be Counted”, “The Blues Brothers”, “Blues Brothers 2000”, “The Lonely Guy”, “The Yards”, and “Alice in Wonderland” in which he played the role of Tweedledum along with his wife who played Tweedledee. In terms of his personal life, Lawrence married co-performer Eydie Gorme in 1957 in Las Vegas, Nevada and shared two children. Unfortunately, their son Michael Robert died in 1986 at the age of 23 due to ventricular fibrillation. Their other son, David Nessim is a composer, most known for his works in “High School Musical”. Gorme died in 2013.
