Raised in his home town, he got his name after his eponymous 19th century predecessor who was an author as well as a physician. Before matriculating from St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire in 1987, Silas attended The Montgomery Country Day School. Later, he enrolled at Brown University from which he graduated in 1991 with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Religion. This was followed by a handful of acting engagements in several minor off-Broadway stage plays, before he enrolled at the University of California, San Diego from which he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1995. Silas’ on-camera debut occurred the same year when he appeared in an episode of the “Silk Stalkings” TV series, which provided the basis for Silas Weir Mitchell’s current net worth.

The next couple of years Silas spent crafting his acting skills through a variety of supporting roles in a dozen TV series and several movies before, with the beginning of the 2000s, he began to appear in more memorable roles, such as in “The Practice”, “Nash Bridges” and “24” TV series, as well as the movies “Rat Race” (2001) and “The Whole Ten Yards” (2004). Between 2003 and 2005, Silas starred in several television series including “Cold Case”, “CSI: Miami”, “JAG” as well as “CSI: NY” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”, and also appeared in the drama movie “Heart of the Beholder” (2005). However, the real breakthrough in his acting career occurred later in 2005, when he was cast for the role of Charles ‘Haywire’ Patoshik in the popular TV drama series “Prison Break”, through its first two seasons, ’til 2007. 1[Talking about his wife] We have a three-week rule. Every three weeks, I either find time to go home to L.A., or she comes up here.
2The way I tend to look at what goes on in that world, not to sound high-faluting, forgive me, but it's sort of psycho-mythological in a lot of ways. I think a lot of mythology is meaningful to us as humans because it puts psychological forms in a kind of an organization that we can understand. -On studying religion for roles like Monroe in Grimm (2011).
3I play outsiders. That's just the way it's gone for me, and I think that's fantastic. I like it because I've always been interested in how the other guy thinks. I want to know what's going on in his head. You see people on the street, talking to themselves, and you're like, "What are they talking about?" I'm interested in that. Even people that are speaking in tongues are interesting. What's going on there? What's channeling through there? I'm definitely interested in that. When I was in college, I said, "In Sam Shepard's world, I am the main guy. But, in the normal world, I am the other guy." It requires a certain kind of world for me to live in, as the main guy. The fun thing about Monroe is that he could really go anywhere. He is a complex dude.
