He went to Gaffney High School where he played both football and basketball for the high school team, Gaffney Indians. During his high school career, Sidney received numerous honors including being named as All-State in both sports, and Offensive Player of the Year in football, among other accolades. He also won two state titles with the basketball team and a championship with the football team. After matriculation Sidney enrolled at the University of South Carolina, continuing his football career; in his first season he posted 1,143 yards with 70 catches, which led to 13 touchdowns.
