Not a great deal is known about Shawn`s early life, except for the fact that he went to El Dorado High School, where he excelled in football; he set the record for Longest Run from Scrimmage and all-time Rushing record, for 98 yards, both of which are active today. Also, his jersey number #1 has been retired by the El Dorado High School, and he was inducted into the school`s Football Hall of Fame in 1983. However, he chose a career as a bodybuilder, and in 1983 entered this first competition, winning the California Gold Cup. He won several more junior competitions, including Teenage Mr. California, Teenage Mr. Orange Country, Jr. World Championships and National Championships, before for the first time entering the Mr. Olympia competition in 1988. His debut ended somewhat ingloriously, as he finished in 13th place, however, since then he has competed in 12 Mr. Olympia events, and has never finished worse than in 5th place. Some of his best results include 2nd places in 1994, 1996 and 3rd places in 1990, 1993, and 1997, which only increased his net worth. However, he was stripped of the title of 1990 Arnold Classic Champion when he subsequently failed a drugs test.
Although the Mr. Olympia title has eluded him during his entire career, he can praise himself with other awards and titles, including the Pro Ironman Champion, and he was also inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame of Professional Bodybuilding in 2007.
His professional career ended in 2001, and since then he has been working with the Swedish company that produces shakers, SmartShake, which has only increased further his net worth. Furthermore, he contributes to the Muscular Development Magazine, while he is also a host on the MDTV channel, and the MD Radio station.
When it comes to speak about his personal life, he has been married to Kristie Ray since 2003; the couple has two children together.
Shawn is a well-known philanthropist; he has donated over $55,000 to the Children`s Hospital of Orange County, collected through his annual charity golf tournament, held by his fundraising non-profit organization Vyo Tech Nutritionals.
