During his childhood Michaels moved frequently, as he was a child of a military officer. Some of his early years he spent in Reading, England, however, the majority of his childhood days he spent in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Randolph High School, where his athleticism came on display; he excelled in various sports, mostly football, and eventually he became the captain of the team. Following graduation, he enrolled Southwest Texas State University, however, he soon realized that studying was not for him, and eventually dropped out of college in order to pursue the career of a wrestler. His desire to become a member of the wrestling industry had emerged when Michaels was 12 years old, and ever since it was only a question of time.

His first chance to enter the professional world happened when he was 20 years old. He began to train with the legendary Mexican wrestler Jose Lothario, and soon had his debut in the National Wrestling Alliance, under his adopted name of Shawn Michaels. His debut was on the 16th October 1984, against Art Crews. However, he lost that match, but he managed to impress veterans of the wrestling industry, including Terry Taylor, with his skills. The next few years he spent in the NWA, managing to win the Tag-Team Championship belt along with Marty Jannetty in 1985, fighting against The Batten Twins.

In 1986, he was in Texas All-Star Wrestling, and again was a member of a tag team, this time with Paul Diamond, and once more won the Tag-Team Championship belt. Following this success, he signed with the American Wrestling Association and was again paired with Marty Jannetty, only this time they were named Midnight Rockers.

Since 1989, Michaels has become one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the WWF, and later WWE since 2002. His net worth rose with every new contract he signed with the World Wrestling Entertainment, eventually becoming the main source of his net worth. During the years he spent in the WWE, he managed to win some of the most prestigious wrestling events including Royal Rumble in 1995 and 1996, which also increased his net worth. He was a Tag-Team Champion in five teams with wrestling partners such as John Cena, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Triple H and “Diesel” Kevin Nash.

Unfortunately, in 2010, his career came to an end, after the match with The Undertaker which Michaels lost, and due to its stipulation, he had to retire from the WWE as a wrestler and with the emotional speech on the 29th March said goodbye to his wrestling days. However, he has since been a part of the WWE as an ambassador and the occasional referee.

During his successful career, Michaels has been recognized with several signature moves, one of them is the Sweet Chin Music, ending the majority of matches with that move.

Regarding his personal life, Shawn`s first wife was Theresa Wood (1988-1994). In 1999, he married Rebecca Curci (now Hinckenbottom); she is a former Nitro Girl of the WCW. The couple has a son and daughter.
