From his teen years, Sam was inspired by martial artists, and once in high school he began competing in wrestling. He went to Mt. Spokane High School and was a notable member of the wrestling team, and now a successful mixed martial artist, Sam is passing on his knowledge to youngsters as an assistant coach for the team.

His professional training began in 2007 and later the same year he made his professional debut in which he defeated Brian Clayton in Combat Caged Warriors 4 event. However, following his successful debut, Sam took a hiatus from professional fighting until 2011, and then until joining the UFC, he won 9 fights and lost only one to compile a record of 10-1. His debut in UFC came on the 1st June 2012 against Christiano Marcello, from which he came out victorious, defeating his opponent in the second round. Before he joined the UFC officially, Sam was a part of The Ultimate Fighter: Live, defeating Erin Beach to enter the Ultimate Fighter house. Unfortunately, Sam lost in the first series to Chris Saunders, by a split decision. Many were against the decision, even Dana White, UFC president, spoke for Sam, feeling he was inadequately proclaimed as the looser, but the decision wasn’t changed.

However, he got his chance in the UFC and won his debut bout, but then lost two fights in a row, to Rony Jason which was his featherweight debut, and Maximo Blanco. Sam managed to bounce back with a win over Godofredo Pepey, but continued in mixed form to compile a record of 15 wins with eight lost matches before he was released from the UFC. Along the way, he defeated such fighters as Aaron Phillips, Akira Corassani, and Yaotzin Meza, but lost to Katsunori Kikuno, Doo Ho Choi, Gabriel Benitez, and Gavin Tucker.

Most recently, he has signed with the Bellator MMA and is awaiting his first fight with the new promotion company.

Sam was a part of the documentary film “Fight Life”, released in 2013, with several other mixed martial artists, including Mike Swick, Nick Diaz, Michael Chiesa, John McCarthy, Frank Shamrock among many others.

Regarding his personal life, little is known about Sam’s private affaits, since he tends to keep his most intimate details, such as marital status and number of children, hidden from the public eyes.
