He studied at Oakland Technical High School in Oakland California, and later on at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduation, he then studied at the College of Sante Fe, New Mexico and also the University of New Mexico.

Dunbar’s acting career only started in 1993 in the movie “Misery Loves Company”, but after his first film his career became more consistent in the world of television. In 1994, he was cast as Baines in the series “Earth 2”, and after his first series, he then became a regular guest star in a variety of shows like “The Good News”, “Pacific Blue”, “The Pretenders” and “The Practice”.
