Roberto turned professional as a boxer when he was only 16 years old, but progressed rather quickly, and four years later, he won his first world title in the Lightweight division, with a victory against Ken Buchanan, marking the beginning of the increase in his overall net worth. During the next seven years, Roberto managed to retain the title, winning against several contenders such as Esteban De Jesus, Jimmy Robertson, Hector Thompson, and others, securing a record of 62 wins and only one loss.
