Parish attended Woodlawn High School, and helped the team win the Class AAAA state championship in 1972. Despite all of his achievements, he had difficulties due to severe penalties given by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for supposed academic unsuitability. He had a successful basketball run at the Centenary College of Louisiana from 1972 to 1976, however, the NCAA penalties erased him from national recognition. During this time he played for the US national team in the 1975 Pan American Games, and led the team to a gold medal.

After graduating from college, Robert entered the 1976 NBA Draft and was picked in the first round by the Golden State Warriors. He was also drafted in the ABA but opted to go with the Warriors who were the NBA Champions two seasons prior. However, during his time with the team, they were not able to get to the playoffs, and in 1980, Parish was traded to the Celtics in a pre-draft exchange that sent him to Boston, where he would play with Larry Bird, Cedric Maxwell, and Kevin McHale from 1980 to 1994, winning three NBA titles and being named one of “The Big Three” of Boston. Even today, they are considered one of the greatest front courts in NBA history. After his time with the Celtics, he played two seasons with the Charlotte Hornets and then played his final season with the Chicago Bulls at the age of 43. During his last season, the Bulls would win the title, and he would become the oldest player to win an NBA Championship.

Over the course of his career, Parish was a nine-time NBA All-Star. Nearing the end of his run, he was named to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, and is called by Bill Walton as the “greatest shooting big man of all time”. The Celtics would retire his jersey 00. He announced his retirement during an off season interview right after his 21st NBA season. After finishing his career as a player, he then became a part of the Celtics organization where he still works, continuing his involvement in basketball as a mentor.

For his personal life, Robert was married to Nancy Saad and they had a child. However, they divorced in 1990.
