He matriculated from Carmel High School in Mundelein, Illinois, where the family moved in 1975. Then he enrolled at Pennsylvania State University, where he became a chairman of the College’s Republican chapter. In 1990, he was elected into the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, for the 18th congressional district, winning against Doug Walgren with 51-48 % margin.
