He began his career as an assistant coach in the basketball team called The Hawaiʻi Rainbow Warriors which represents the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In 1976 Rick was promoted to interim head coach of the above mentioned team. However, he went on to work as the assistant coach of The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team which represents Syracuse University in 1976. Moreover, he was named SEC Coach of the Year three times in 1990, 1991, 1996 and C-USA Coach of the Year in 2005.

Pitino is the co-author of the book titled ‘The One-Day Contract: How to Add Value to Every Minute of Your Life’.

In 1976, Pitino married Joanne Minardi. One of his sons, Richard Pitino, is the head coach of The Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basketball team.
