Ray’s career as a sportsman started while he was serving in the US Army, and he compiled an amateur record of 64-6. Mercer competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul in the heavyweight category, and won the gold medal, then his professional career started a year later; he scored a 3rd round TKO, and then won the NABF title in August 1990. In January 1991 Ray defeated WBO heavyweight champion Francesco Damiani and took over the WBO belt, so his net worth was well established.

After a lucrative period, Mercer suffered from a sports injury and was forced to step out of the battleground for a while. However, he returned in February 2001, fighting his way through to a match with the WBO title holder Wladimir Klitschko, but failing to make any further noted success, partly due to his age. Still persistent in continuing his fighting career, he decided to go to Japan and challenge Musashi in K-1 kickboxing combat sport in June 2004, which he repeated in March the following year against Remy Bonjasky. Ray also decided to try mixed martial arts, and collaborated with Felix Martinez, the co-founder of Cage Fury Fighting Championships, in order to promote himself. Later, in June 2009 Mercer made a big comeback after defeating former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia at Adrenaline III: Bragging Rights. He signed with the King of the Cage, a mixed martial arts promotion organization in March 2010. During his overall sports career, so far Mercer has won 36 of 44 boxing matches, 2 kickboxing matches and 1 MMA match.

When it comes to his private life, almost no information is available as he tends to keep it away from the public. However, in 1995 he was accused of domestic violence in Fayetteville, North Carolina, when he allegedly hit his former girlfriend.
