When it comes to Phil’s education, he attended the University of Ohio, during which days Mattingly was active as an athlete – he graduated in 2006..

He went on to complete his college education studying at the Boston University, completing his Master’s Degree in Journalism in 2008. Being interested in journalism, he obviously decided to pursue his career in that direction – he started off by working as Capitol Hill/Washington reporter for the newspaper Cape Cod Times, but remained in that position for only three months. Subsequently, Phil joined Congressional Quarterly, serving as a staff writer and economics and financial affairs reporter. He then joined Bloomberg News, working in a similar position, and after that he went on to work as a Justice Department reporter for Bloomberg News, and as a White House correspondent after that. Working for Bloomberg, Mattingly covered stories regarding major political candidates, and the domestic and foreign policy actions of the Obama administration. Most importantly, he has been serving as a New York based political CNN correspondent since December 2015, working for one of America’s and the world’s leading networks. He still works for the previously mentioned network and his skills in reporting and journalism gained him popularity, and allowed him to progress career-wise.

One of his most notable projects for CNN was the firing of the former FBI director Comney by Donald Trump. Reportedly, Comney was working on a case about Trump’s relations with Russia, and upon the beginning of the investigation was fired. It was postulated that the new President of the United States did that so that he could retain secrets he had regarding that topic, and Brian Fallon, Hillary Clinton’s former campaign secretary called CNN to openly talk about that topic. Being involved in this job, Phil himself had harsh views and was critical of Trump’s actions and strategy.

Moving forwards to Mattingly’s personal life, he has been married to Chelsea Carter since 10 December 2011 and Phil and Chelsea announced that they were expecting their first child in early 2017. Phil is active on social media such as Twitter, on which he is followed by more than 40,000 people and his account is also verified.
