Bush in 1988 and Bob Dole in 1996, after which in 2004 he served as an advisor for the Ukrainian presidential campaign of Viktor Yanukovych, continuing for six years. This began his continued involvement in the sector of Russian politics and business, as Yanukovich was pro-Russian, and now lives in the country.
In 2016, Manafort started working with Donald Trump for his presidential campaign, and was quickly promoted to become his campaign manager. Around this time, he started attracting attention from media and federal agencies due to his connection with Yanukovych, as it was reported that he illegally received money from the former president. Due to the uneasiness he created because of this and other alleged connections with Russia, he eventually resigned as campaign chairman and chief strategist for Trump.
