Born in Rodas, Cienfuegos, Cuba, Sousa spent his youth growing up with his grandmother, and ended up moving in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Right after high school, he attended Horacio Peterson’s acting school, but soon realized that it wasn’t his dream to be an actor.

Sousa’s career started in advertising, working as an art designer and advertising draftsman on various television programs and commercials. He was able to work in big networks like VTV and RCTV. His early years in the advertising world helped him with his income and also led him to the Miss Venezuela Organization.

In 1969, while working for a publicity company, the Miss Venezuela Organization became Sousa’s client and he was assigned to work with the Venezuelan Committee of Beauty. He soon committed more time to the organization, becoming an adviser to selected contestants and even designing nightgowns for the competition. His eye for beauty led the contestants that he helped earn their crown.

In 1981, Sousa became the president of the Miss Venezuela Organization, and has since made the company the most successful pageant team in history. For over thirty years, Sousa helped produce seven winners in the Miss Universe competition, six in the Miss World pageant, seven in the Miss International category, and two in the Miss Earth contest. His success with the organization not only made him very well-known but also helped his net worth tremendously.

In 2007, Sousa also helped judge the Univision’s Hispanic beauty contest Nuestra Belleza Latina, along with Lupita Jones and Carlos Calderon.

Despite his success, Sousa also faced criticism as president of the Miss Venezuela Organization. He drew some negative reactions when he expressed his opinion saying that he would not select Venezuelan women with African features for the pageant. He also received flak when he became known to support and even encourage contestants to undertake plastic surgery.

Today, Sousa still serves as the president of the Miss Venezuela Organization.

His personal life is still very private, with no details divulged to the media.
