Sarkozy’s family found wealth when he was young, after his father found success in advertising. Nicolas attended Lycee Chaptal and then moved to Cours Saint-Louis de Monceau where he would get his baccalaureate in 1973. After matriculating, he attended the Universite Paris X Nanterre to study private law and business law. During his time there, he started to get involved in various political organizations and events. After graduating, he studied at Sciences Po but didn’t graduate. He passed the bar and became a lawyer specializing in family law as well as business law.

Nicolas started his political career as a city councilor of Neuilly-sur-Siene. He was then elected to become mayor of the town and would serve there from 1983 to 2002. During this time, he became the deputy in the National Assembly, and achieved numerous feats during his tenure there, helping negotiate with the “Human Bomb” in 1993; he also was the Minister for the Budget of Prime Minister Edourd Balladur. In 2002, he would be elected as the Minister of the Interior under Jean-Pierre Raffarin. He helped the mass purchase of speed cameras to help promote safety on the road, and became Finance Minister two years later, and would then become head of the UMP. In 2005, he was made Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur.

Sarkozy became instrumental in helping ease relationships between the general population and the Muslim community, and introduced policies for lowering prices on household goods. He got his second term as Minister of the Interior and focused on reforming justice measures on young delinquents, as well as policies with immigrants. As part of the UMP, he helped call for big changes in social and economic policies of France, one of which was a better taxation system. In 2007, he became the UMP candidate for presidential election, eventually coming out at the top of the elections, being inaugurated later in the year.

He would become the first French President to talk to the National Assembly of Quebec. He started a green policy to help reduce carbon dioxide emission, then worked on reforming tax, reducing it to help boost GDP growth. Other projects included creating a voluntary biometric program in airports, but also focused on international affairs. He would campaign once again in 2012, however, he lost against Francois Hollande.

Nicolas returned to politics in 2014 and would become the chairman of the UMP party once again. He then published the book “La France pour la Vie”, but then retired from politics in 2016.

For his personal life, it is known that Sarkozy married Marie-Dominique Culioli in 1982 and they have two children but divorced in 1996 after being separated for a few years. In 1996, he married model Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz and they have a son, but eventually divorced in 2007 after his election as President. In 2008, he married model Carla Bruni and they have a daughter.
