Nate is the son of Sally and Brian David Silver, who served as chair of the political science department at Michigan State University.

From an early age, Nate showed an interest in math and numbers, and was rather proficient in mathematics. He fell in love with baseball in 1984, and ever since would look to analyze the game numbers, which eventually resulted in a successful career.

He went to East Lansing High School, where he won first place in the State of Michigan’s 49th annual John S. Knight Scholarship Contest for senior high school debaters. Also during his high school years, Nate showed an interest in journalism, writing for The Portrait, a student newspaper of East Lansing High School. Following his matriculation in 1996, Nate enrolled at the University of Chicago, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He continued to work on his writing skills while at University, as he wrote for the Chicago Weekly News and the Chicago Maroon.

Soon after graduating, Nate found his first job, becoming an employee at KPMG in the position of a transfer pricing consultant, serving in the position for the next three years, but meantime working on his PECOTA system. In 2004 he left his job to focus on his writing career.

His luck changed when he sold his PECOTA system to Baseball Prospectus, and as a part of the deal, he became a partner at the company. He continued upgrading his system, while at the same time writing a column – “Lies, Damned Lies” -, while also developing the Elo rating system for Major League Baseball.

Thanks to his rising popularity, Nate also started contributing to ESPN.com, Slate, The New York Sun, Sports Illustrated, and The New York Times, which further increased his net worth and popularity.

Encouraged by his success as a writer, Nate continued to develop his writing career by starting a blog = FiveThirtyEight – focusing mainly on analysis, and following his successful calling of the 2008 presidential election, Nate received massive attention, and his FiveThirtyEight blog was transferred to The New York Times. For the next three years, he published material under The New York Times domain, but in 2013 he sold FiveThirtyEight to ESPN, and since then he has created content in five different areas – politics, economics, science, life and sports. He has also launched a podcast, and is additionally working on a string of documentary films.

In 2012 Nate published the book “The Signal and the Noise: Why Most Predictions Fail – but Some Don’t”, which became a best seller, reaching No. 12 on the New York Times Best Sellers List of non-fiction books, which increased his net worth by a large margin.

Thanks to his accomplishments, Nate received five honorary doctorates, and a number of prestigious awards, including for “Best Political Blog” from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in the 17th annual Webby Awards, among other honors.

When it comes to his personal life, Nate is openly gay, though he hasn’t revealed whether he is in a relationship or not, and has successfully hidden all of his most intimate details.
