Who is Kelly Hu?

Kelly Ann Hu was born in Honolulu, Hawaii USA, on 13 February 1968 – her zodiac sign is Aquarius, and she holds American nationality. She’s an actress and former fashion model, with close to 150 acting credits to her name, while she’s perhaps still known best for her portrayal of the lead character The Sorceress in the popular 2002 action adventure fantasy movie “The Scorpion King”, directed by Chuck Russell, and which also starred Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Steven Brand. It follows a desert warrior who’s seeking revenge against those who destroyed his homeland, and the movie won two of the five awards for which it was nominated.

Early life and education

Kelly was raised in Honolulu alongside her brother Glenn, by their father Herbert Hu who was a salesman and bird breeder, and their mother Juanita Perez who was an engineering drafter; Kelly’s parents divorced before she turned 10, but they remained equally involved in raising their children. Her brother Glenn’s today serving in the US Army as a resource manager.

Kelly studied at Ma’ema’e Elementary School, prior to transferring to Kamehameha Schools; she was mostly into martial arts, dancing and singing while growing up. Looking up to her cousin who had become a model in Japan, Kelly began entering various beauty pageants in the US; she was crowned Miss Hawaii Teen USA, and then became the first Asian-American Miss Teen USA, winning the 1985 beauty pageant.

Kelly matriculated in 1986 and then continued modelling, rather than pursuing a college degree, mostly in Italy and Japan; in 1993, she was crowned Miss Hawaii USA.

Kelly made her debut TV series appearance in the 1987 episode “Aloha: Part 1” of the family comedy “Growing Pains”, and the following years saw her appear in an episode or two of various series, such as the romantic drama “Santa Barbara”, the comedy “Night Court” and the action war drama “Tour of Duty”.

She only gained recognition in 1997, when cast to play Rae Chang in the popular romantic drama “Sunset Beach”, created by Josh Griffith and Robert Guza Jr., and which starred Lesley-Anne Down, Sam Behrens and Susan Ward. It follows Meg Cummings who left her husband-to-be on their wedding day, after having found out that he had kissed another woman; the series aired from 1997 to 1999 and won five of the 40 awards for which it was nominated.

What marked the 2000s for Kelly was probably her portrayal of the supporting character Kelly Lee in the popular 2007 comedy “In Case of Emergency”, created by Howard J. Morris, and which starred David Arquette, Jonathan Silverman and Greg Germann. It tells the story of a couple of adults who’ve met again over 10 years after they had studied together at high school.

Kelly could then have been seen playing supporting characters in a couple of critically acclaimed series, such as the animated action adventure “The Spectacular Spider-Man” (voice role), the fantasy horror “The Vampire Diaries”, and the mystery science fiction drama “Warehouse 13”.

Kelly made her debut film appearance in the 1989 adventure horror thriller “Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan”, while a couple of her following roles were in the biographical musical drama “The Doors”, and the  action crime drama “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man” both in 1991, and the 1993 action adventure comedy “Surf Ninjas”.

She portrayed Anchor Woman in the 1995 science fiction crime drama “Strange Days”, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and which starred Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett and Juliette Lewis. It follows a former police officer who’s uncovered a conspiracy in Los Angeles, California, and the movie won two of the six awards for which it was nominated.

Kelly appeared in a couple of popular movies in the 2000s, such as in 2003 the action crime drama “Cradle 2 the Grave” and the action science fiction thriller “X2: X-Men United”, and later the 2008 mystery horror thriller “Farm House”.

She portrayed the lead character Dr. Andi Palmer in the 2018 adventure family science fiction “F. R. E. D. I.”, written and directed by Sean Olson, and which also starred Angus Macfadyen and Candace Cameron Bure. The movie follows a teenager who’s found an AI robot in a forest close to his home, and it won seven of the 18 awards for which it was nominated.

Three of Kelly’s most recent movie roles have been in the  animated crime action “Catwoman: Hunted” (voice role), the mystery thriller “Fallen Angles Murder Club: Friends to Die For” and the mystery “Fallen Angels Murder Club: Heroes and Felons” all in 2022.

Other credits

Kelly’s voiced various characters in numerous videos games, including the 2004 “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords”, the 2008 “Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3”, and the 2014 “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze”.

She received special thanks for the 2018 episode “X2: X-Men United” of the short mini-series “X-Men Mondays”.

Kelly’s made a guest appearance in various talk-shows, most recently in “Slasher Scotty”, “Entertainment Tonight” and “Sidewalks Entertainment”.

R. E. D. I.”


Love life and husband

Even though Kelly prefers to keep the details of her love life to herself, there are still three men whom she’s been with, that the public knows about. Back in 1996, Kelly began dating Ahmad Ali Moussaoui, a non-celebrity American investment banker; the two were together for two years prior to splitting for unknown reasons.

In 1999, she dated Gordon Gilberstan, an American movie producer who’s perhaps known best for his work on the 2017 romantic comedy movie “The Year of Spectacular Men”.

Kelly dated American movie producer Mitch Allen for a couple of months in 2010.

She hasn’t mentioned any other men (or women) whom she’s perhaps been with, so as of July 2022, Kelly seems to be single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.
