Morris Chang was born on the 10th July 1931 in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, China, and is an engineer and entrepreneur, widely known as the founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest maker of computer chips. Morris is also recognized by his two names – Zhang Zhongmou and Chang Chong-mou. His career has been active since the 1960s.

Morris Chang was raised in a traditional family, but moved to HongKong and then Taiwan. After graduation from high school, in 1949 he decided to move to the USA to continue his education at Harvard University. Afterwards, he transferred to studying Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1952 he graduated with a BA degree, and one year later Master degree.

His first job was at the Sylvania Semiconductor, however, after only three years, he quit the job, as he thought he could do better. Soon enough, Chang started working as an engineer at Texas Instruments, but concurrently after six years he secured his PhD. from Stanford University, and his professional career began.

While at Texas Instruments, Morris soon climbed up the ladder and in only three years he became the manager of an engineering section. He stayed at Texas Instruments for 25 years, and eventually became Group Vice President responsible for worldwide semiconductor business.

He quit TI in 1983 and soon was hired as the President and Chief Operating Officer of General Instrument Corporation, however he didn`t stay too long as the company`s President, as he quit a year later.

Chang was hired by the government of Taiwan Area as Chairman and President of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), which increased his net worth by a large margin.

However, his net worth began to rise immensely in 1987, when he founded the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which soon became the main source of his net worth, as the company quickly grew in its worth and significance in the industry. In no time, TSMC became the leading chip manufacturer, a position it keeps even nowadays, and over time, the company has invested in numerous other business areas too, such as lightning and solar energy-related industries, which will only increase its value, and Chang`s net worth.

To speak further of his successful career, Chang  became Chairman of Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, in 1994 ,staying there until 2003. In 2005, Chang appointed Rick Tsai as TMSC`s CEO, however, Chang decided to return on the position in 2009.

Thanks to his successful career, Morris has received numerous prestigious awards, including the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2011, Semiconductor Industry Association’s Robert N. Noyce Award in 2008, and EE Times Annual Creativity in Electronics Lifetime Achievement Award among many others.

When it comes to Moriss Chang’s personal life, he was married to Christine Chen(1953-91) and   has been married to Sophie since 2001, and they live in Taiwan. In his free time, he enjoys classical music and plays bridge.
