Mo Farah Biography

Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah was born on 23 March 1983, in Mogadishu, Somalia, and is a distance runner, best known for competing in 5,000 and 10,000 metre races. He is considered by many as the greatest long distance runner of all time, so all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.

How rich is Mo Farah? As of late-2016, sources estimate a net worth that is at $5 million, mostly earned through a successful career as a runner, including winning the gold medal in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre runs at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics. At the age of eight, Mo moved to Britain with his father who is a British citizen. He attended Isleworth and Syon School, and after matriculating went to Feltham Community College. While he initially had intentions of playing football, his teacher noticed his talent for athletics, and Farah later joined the Borough of Hounslow Athletics Club.

In 1996, at the age of 13 he competed in the London Youth cross-country championship, and finished in ninth place. During the next year he would win the first of five English schools titles, and recognizing his talent, philanthropist Eddie Kulukundis paid the fees to naturalize Mo as a British citizen. In 2001, he would win his first major title at the European Athletics Junior Championship in the 5000 metre. He also started training at St. Mary’s University College and became one of the first students of the Endurance Performance Centre.

In 2006, Mo would become Britain’s second fastest runner at the 5000m after Dave Moorcroft. He would get a silver medal in the European Championship 5000m, and would later win the 2006 European Cross Country Championships in Italy. He would then represent the UK at the 2007 World Championships, finishing the 5000m in sixth place. Two years later, he would set a new British indoor record in the 3000 metre run, and would break his own record a few weeks later, plus winning the European indoor title, which continued to add to his impressive resume.

He placed seventh during the 2009 World Championships in the 5000m, and would gain silver in the 2009 European Cross Country Championships. He would then win the 2010 London 10,000 m beating world record holder Kogo, and continued his success by becoming the first British athlete to run under 13 minutes in the 5000 meter.

His winning run would continue in 2011at the Edinburgh Cross Country. He then relocated to Portland, Oregon to start working with new coach Alberto Salazar, and would continue breaking records. He set a new record at the Prefontaine Classic’s 10,000 m event and would later compete at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in South Korea, winning silver in the 10,000 m and gold in the 5000 m, marking the first time a British man had won a World Championship medal in both categories. His success would be highlighted even further in winning two gold medals during the London 2012 Olympics in both the 10,000 m and 5,000 m races, following which success, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in honor of his services to athletics. In 2013, Mo broke the European 1500 m record, and the following year finished eighth in the London marathon and would successfully defend his 5000 m title in the 2014 European Athletics Championships. He also won gold in the 10,000 m this time, making him the most successful individual in the event’s history. After winning more races in 2015, he had a successful defence during the 2016 Rio Olympics, gaining him two more gold medals. His success increased his net worth even further.

For his personal life, it is known that Mo has a twin brother who lives in Somalia. In 2010, he married long-time girlfriend Tania Neil and their marriage was attended by many athletes. They have three children, and he has a stepdaughter.
