After matriculation, he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1987 MLB Draft, however, he enrolled at Stanford University, where Mike had 31 wins and 16 losses, and posted a 3.89 ERA, which earned him one All-American selection. After his college graduation, Mike was again drafted by the Orioles, but this time as 20th overall pick, a significant rise from the 1987 draft.

Before he saw playing time in the majors, Mike played two years for the Hagerstown Suns of the Eastern League. In 1992 he was brought into the first squad, posting a result of 18 wins and 5 losses, with a 2.54 ERA; his performance was enough to land him his first All-Star appearance. He continued with great form, finishing the season with a 17-11 record, while also being 2nd in strikeouts, shutouts, ERA, and complete games. He earned his fifth Golden Glove Award, and until the end of his career, won two more Golden Gloves, in 2003 and 2008. In 2006, he signed a new two-year contract with the Yankees, worth $23 million, which was an extension to his previous contract and as a result he earned around $19 million in both of his last seasons, significantly increasing his wealth.

Thanks to his successful career, in 2012 he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame.

After retirement, Mike stayed in sports, however, mostly in basketball, working as the head basketball coach for Montoursville Area High School boys’ team, but he is also on the Little League International Board of Directors, located in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
