Mike is of Slavic ancestry, though his family last name was Americanized. He went to Montoursville Area High School, where he started playing competitive baseball, and as a pitcher he had a 24-4 win-loss record, while also posted an ERA of 0.87. After matriculation, he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1987 MLB Draft, however, he enrolled at Stanford University, where Mike had 31 wins and 16 losses, and posted a 3.89 ERA, which earned him one All-American selection.
