Michael was known for having an unusual childhood, having been removed from the custody of his mother and taken to his father’s Neverland Ranch; this was after the divorce of the couple in 1999, when Debbie signed custody over to Michael Jackson. He was raised there by caretakers and nannies, and it wasn’t until 2006 when his mother would be able to see him again, but by then Joseph could barely recognize her. When his father died, he went to the funeral and sang his father’s hit songs including “Heal the World” and “We Are the World”. Michael Jackson suffered cardiac arrest at the age of 50 while Joseph was still 12 years old, but he along with siblings Blanket Jackson and Paris Jackson spoke to their father’s fans during the funeral.

After his father’s death, he moved to his grandmother’s place, but was still the topic of news reports because of Michael Jackson’s fortune. The siblings were also seen at the Grammy Awards the following year, receiving a posthumous award for their father. A month after the Grammy Awards, an autopsy on Michael Jackson revealed that he had died from prescription drug intoxication. This resulted in the arrest of Dr. Conrad Murray, who was revealed as not having the license to prescribe those kinds of drugs. Michael Jackson’s death was ruled a homicide and Murray was sent to prison for four years. The Jackson family filed a lawsuit against A.E.G. Live, which was the company that was responsible for Michael Jackson’s planned tour entitled “This is It”. Lawyers demanded an amount of around $1.5 billion, but the court ruled that A.E.G. was not responsible for Michael Jackson’s death. In 2015, Joseph graduated from Buckley School.

Aside from topics and debates surrounding his father, Michael Jr. has also made a few appearances on television. He was in an episode of “VH1: All Access” and was also seen in “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, “The X Factor”, and “Entertainment Tonight” on which he was a special guest correspondent. He’s also seen as a prospective actor, having appeared in various productions such as “Michael Jackson Memorial”, “The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards”, and “Living with Michael Jackson: A Tonight Special”.
