Who is Mauricio Ochmann?

Mauricio Ochmann is an American-born Mexican actor, who rose to fame for his recurring roles in telenovelas such as “Azul Tequila”, “Hablame de Amor”, and “El Clon”. He’s also appeared in several American projects, including the movie “A Message in the Bottle” and the TV series “That’s Life”.

He was born under the Zodiac sign Scorpio on 16 November 1977, in Washington, D.C., USA. As of 2021, he is 44 years old and holds American nationality.

Early life and Family

Coming from a difficult family background, he was abandoned by his biological parents and later adopted by Guillermo and Maria Sanchez, whom he spent most of his childhood living with, but who later decided to part ways. Following the divorce, Mauricio and his adoptive mother moved to Mexico, where she began a romantic relationship with German Thomas Ochomann, who had three sons from his previous marriage – Thomas, Christian and Paulo.

Growing up, Mauricio displayed an interest and talent for performing arts which prompted him to join various theater groups. When it comes to education, not much is known except that he later attended Joan Baron Studio to study acting.

Career

He began pursuing acting as his career during his teenage years, with little success until aged 20, when in 1997 he landed his first role portraying Hector in the telenovela “La Cosa”, opposite Hector Suarez. Following the end of the show, he moved to L.A. to focus on his career.

For many aspiring actors and performers, making it in L.A. usually comes with numerous obstacles, from financial support to landing a breakthrough role, which is one of the reasons he waited tables, while hoping to find a talent agent, so he could start auditioning for roles.

After struggling for a while, he finally landed a minor role in 1999, portraying a mail boy in the romantic drama movie “A Message in the Bottle”, opposite Kevin Costner and Paul Newmann. Following his appearance in the film, he returned to Mexico, where he met the producer and actor Humberto Zurita, who gave him a role in the telenovela “Azul Tequila”, opposite famous and popular actress, Barbara Mori. After gaining recognition and some popularity, he landed the role portraying the main character named Maximiliano in the telenovela “Hablame de Amor”. After making his TV debut, he switched to theater, performing in the play “Equus”, garnering several accolades, including the National Association of Theater Critics award in the category Actor Revelation in Theater. In 2000 he returned to Los Angeles, and landed a role in the TV sitcom “That’s Life”, appearing in the first season.

Once again, following the end of the latter project, he went to Mexico, where he scooped a role in another telenovela – “Como en el cine” – opposite Lorena Rojas. Two years later, he booked another lead role in the telenovela sequel “Mirada de mujer, el regreso” appearing as Jose Chacon, then the same year he was cast in the Mexican romantic movie “Ladies’ Night”.

In 2004, he appeared in the comedy movie “7 Mujeres 1 Homosexual y Carlos”, sharing the screen with Rogelio Guerra and Luis Felipe Tovar.  He then switched from his usual roles, and starred in the thriller film “Ver, ojir y callar”, once again appearing opposite Luis Felipe Tovar and Paolo Nunez.

In the following period, Mauricio mostly focused on TV appearances, continuing to build his profile as one of the more renowned telenovela actors. In 2005 he scooped the role as Ignacio Reyes in the telenovela “Amarte Asi Frijolito”, followed by his lead role in the telenovela “Marina”.

In 2007 he made several appearances, ranging from lead to recurring roles in numerous telenovelas, including “Decisiones”, “Dame Chocolate”, and “Victoria”.

His next role came in 2009, when Mauricio portrayed Vicotrino Mora in the telenovela “Vicotrinos”. The following year, he landed various other roles in telenovelas such as “”El Clon”, “El Sexo Debil”, and “Rosa Diamante”. After making a one-episode appearance in the Mexican HBO series “Capadocia”, he starred in the American telenovela “El Senor de los Cielos”; created by Luis Zelkowicz, the show garnered huge success and popularity throughout its seven-season run, additionally receiving numerous accolades. Mauricio’s portrayal of El Chema, the notorious leader of the Juarez cartel, earned him several nominations and the award at the 4th Your World Awards in the category for the Best Bad Boy in Series.

In 2015 he transitioned again in his roles, and appeared in the romantic comedy film entitled “A la Mala”, opposite Aislinn Debez, followed by his single episode appearance in the sitcom “Easy”. In 2016, he landed the lead role in the “El Senor de Los Cielos” spin-off series “El Chema”, which ran for just one season but of 84 episodes. In the following years, he starred in the two movies, “Hazlo Como Hombre” and “Te Juro Que yo no Fui”.

His latest roles

In 2019 he starred the documentary streaming series “De Viaje con Los Derbes”, opposite Eugenio Derbez and Alessandra Rosaldo, and the following year he appeared in the Mexican black comedy TV series “R”, portraying the title character, Francisco Barron.

Personal life

Mauricio, similar to the characters he often portrays in telenovelas, has had a quite turbulent love life.

He has married twice, firstly to the Chilean actress and stage performer Maria Jose Prieto, known for her roles in telenovelas such as “Separados” and “Tentacion”. The couple tied the knot in 2004, and during the same year welcomed their daughter named Lorenza. However, the marriage didn’t last, and they divorced in 2008, following which he was linked to various other actresses, such as Adriana Campos, Victoria Ruffo and Begona Narvaez.

In 2014 he met the actress Aislinn Derbez on the set for the movie “La mala” and they soon began a romantic relationship. Two years later, they tied the knot in Tempoztlan, Morelos.

Besides marrying, the couple also embarked on a joint entrepreneurial journey, in 2016 founding the L.A.-based production company “A Toda Madre Entertainment”.

On 6 September 2017, the couple announced via social media that they were expecting a child together, and Aislinn gave birth to a girl they named Kailani on 25 February 2018.

During their relationship and marriage, they worked on various projects, including the docu-series “Del Viaje con Los Derbez” which premiered in 2019, but many noted that the relationship between the two seemed forced, and that they obviously had private problems, reflected through the lack of communication and distancing between the two on the show. Additionally, some noticed little coexistence on the part of Ochmann with the family of his then-wife.

In March 2020, Aislinn released the statement announcing her separation from Mauricio, disclosing: “We need time, space and above all A LOT of respect on your part to be able to figure out some things privately and prepare ourselves for what will come”.

Not long after the announcement, they officially divorced, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. Aislinn commented later on her four-year-long marriage, saying: ”I am so satisfied because I did enjoy it so much, I was so present in so many moments, I gave my one hundred percent I say ‘I love what I experienced, and I am full and satisfied, and they were the most beautiful moments that I lived in my life, but it is not like I want to go back there”.

Rumors about the divorce

As it happens with the celebrities, after the divorce various media outlets began speculating about the reasons the couple parted ways, additionally inflamed by rumors of alleged infidelity. While the situation seemed to have died down, Mauricio began dating Paulina Burrola in January 2021, which prompted many of his fans to speculate whether Paulina was the reason for the parting.

Paulina is a model, singer and TV host, who rose to fame as the Sonora representative at the beauty pageant Our Beauty Mexico in 2011.

The internet exploded, and both his and his ex-wife’s fans started sharing their opinions online.  Additionally, some media outlets claimed that Mauricio and Paulina had been in contact since 2019, as he often liked and commented on her photos while being married to Aislinn. Mauricio and Paulina have not come forward with any information regarding their relationship, and on the other hand, his ex-wife Aislinn didn’t seem to be bothered with the news of Mauricio’s new relationship. A video of Aislinn surfaced, on a trip she took to Switzerland, enjoying the company of two men; one was identified as Jonathan Kubbed, a Belgian copywriter.

Even though she hasn’t disclosed anything, fans speculate that Jonathan is her current boyfriend, as she has previously been linked to him, and often shares photos with him.

Despite the rumors, according to the former couple, they have managed to maintain a friendly relationship for the sake of their now three-year-old daughter.

Alcohol and drug abuse

Mauricio disclosed that during his childhood he had had problems socializing and fitting in, which had made him a victim of frequent bullying. In order to cope with the rejection from his peers and his biological parents, he began drowning his sorrow in alcohol, and drugs soon followed. According to his statements, drugs and alcohol posed an escape from reality, which at the time he needed badly.

His frequent usage became more frequent, and at some point it interfered with his career, which prompted Mauricio to ask for help. Later he was admitted to a rehabilitation clinic, and in an interview said: “There came a time when I had to raise my hand and ask for help, because I was on a path of excesses, of a slow death, but something inside told me: ‘This is not you, this is not around here and such, but it lasted me until I was 28 years old”.
