Although born in Ardmore, he and his parents moved to Springerville, Arizona when he was seven, as his parents had bought a ranch. The following year Mark broke his leg so badly that doctors predicted that he wouldn`t be able to even walk again; fortunately Mark managed to fully recover, and when he turned 12 he started competing in team-roping events.
He went to the Round Valley High School and, encouraged by his father, Mark began playing football. He had several notable results, but still couldn`t attract some of the prestigious universities, and in the end enrolled at Eastern Arizona Junior College, where he played for the men`s football team and earned All-America honors. After one season he transferred to Arizona State University, where he also played for one season, before eventually becoming a student of East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma., and while there he was rewarded with Outstanding Defensive Lineman honors for the North in the 1979 Senior Bowl.
After a successful football career in college, Mark declared for the 1979 NFL Draft, and was selected in the second round as the 41st overall pick by the New York Jets, which marked the start of his professional career and the start of his net worth as he signed a rookie contract, however, details weren`t made public.
