Mario Draghi was born on 3 September 1947, in Rome Italy, and is an economist, banker and manager now best known as the current President of the European Central Bank, a position he has held since 2011 and which, according to Forbes magazine in 2015, makes him the eighth most powerful person in the world.

So just how rich is Mario Draghi? Authoritative sources estimate that Mario’s net worth is over $4 million, his wealth having been accrued from his long career in banking and the finance industry overall, plus he is still earning an annual salary of $400,000 from his current position.

Mario Draghi studied at the Massimiliano Massimo Institute (founded by Ignatius Loyola in 1551), and subsequently graduated from La Sapienza University with an economics degree, and then became the first Italian to gain a PhD (in economics) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. He was a professor at the Cesare Alfieri Faculty of Political Science of the University of Florence from 1981 until 1994, and concurrently Italian Executive Director at the World Bank. Then Mario was a fellow of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Of course all these positions contributed significantly to Mario Draghi’s net worth.

From 1991-2001, Mario Draghi was the Director of the Italian Treasury, during which time he was instrumental in drafting the law that governs Italian financial markets to this day, but he also served on the boards of several Italian banks. Then from 2002-05 Draghi was vice-chairman and managing director of Goldman Sachs International and a member the firm’s management committee. Mario’s net worth continued to grow steadily.

In 2005 Draghi was appointed Governor of the Bank of Italy, and in 2006 elected to the internationally important position of Chairman of the Financial Stability Forum, which on behalf of the G20, brings together representatives of governments, central banks and national supervisors of financial markets, aiming to promote international financial stability and international cooperation between countries and institutions.

These responsibilities were ideal preparation for Mario Draghi assuming the presidency of the European Central Bank in 2011, in succession to Jean-Claude Trichet, which needed to be approved by the European Parliament, as the term runs for eight years and selecting the right person is obviously of considerable importance. As the president of the European Central Bank, Draghi is responsible for maintaining financial unity across 18 countries, and in carrying out his responsibilities with considerable success, has earned the nickname “Super Mario.” So far he has managed to maintain the integrity of the Euro during a lengthy period of heavy pressure on the currency, and nationalistic concerns from several constituent countries within the Euro zone, to the point where early in 2015 in an appearance before the European Parliament, Draghi said that the future of the eurozone was at risk unless member countries gave up some independence and created more Pan-European government institutions. Draghi’s salary continues to add to his net worth.

In his personal life, Mario Draghi has been married to Serena since 1973, and they have two children. In 2000 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
