Luke Rockhold was raised in an athletic family by father Steve Rockhold, a former professional basketball player in Europe, and his mother, who was akeen tennis player; his brother is Matt Rockhold, a professional surfer. However, when he was 10 years old, he quit it and later joined the wrestling team while he attended Soquel High School, and parallel with that he was taking Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes. He joined Strikeforce, as he was offered the Strikeforce Young Guns II card, and made a victorious debut. After that he was offered another fight, this time by the Strikeforce: Destruction card, and also making it successful, as his opponent was again defeated by submission. He continued successfully to fight within Strikeforce, eventually reaching Strikeforce Challengers: Villasenor vs. Cyborg event, in which he defeated Cory Devela. In 2011, Luke became the Middleweight Champion, defeating Ronaldo Souza, andbefore he left Strikeforce, he managed to defend his title twice, winning fights against Tim Kennedy, and Keith Jardine, but then withdrew from the fight against Lorenz Larkin, due to injury.

After the Strikeforce ceased to exist, Luke joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where he continued to fight successfully, winning several main events over the years, including UFC Fight Night 35, UFC Fight Night 55, and UFC on Fox 15, against such fighters as Michael Bisping, Lyoto Machida, and Costas Philippou, among others.

In December 2015, Luke became the UFC Middleweight Championship, defeating, now former champion Chris Weidman, which increased his net worth to a large margin.
