Lonzo grew up with parents who were both college basketball players. He started playing the sport at a young age, on teams coached by their father. He attended Chino Hills High School, having great averages in points, rebounds, blocks, assists and steals. During his senior year, he led the team to a 35-0 record and the state title, making them the consensus top team in the nation.
He actually averaged a triple double, and so won numerous awards, including Naismith Prep Player of the Year, Mr. Basketball USA, and Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year.
After matriculating, Ball became a five star recruit, in 2015 signing a letter of intent to join the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He quickly helped the team as soon as he joined, and made the Bruins one of the top offensive teams in the country. He became the MVP of the Wooden Legacy tournament, helping the team win against Texas A&M. He often competed with Markelle Fultz who was also a prospect to enter as a top pick during the NBA draft. Ball would break Gary Payton’s season record for assists with the Pac-12, however, the Bruins would later be eliminated in the Sweet 16. He then declared to become a part of the 2017 NBA draft, with his college performances comparable with Jason Kidd, and having gained numerous honors from his time with UCLA. He was awarded the Wayman Tisdale Award, the Oscar Robertson Trophy, and the Naismith College Player of the Year.
Lonzo was selected in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, the draft’s second overall pick. He signed a four year contract with the team, and quickly became the 2017 NBA Summer League MVP, making two triple-doubles during the league, but fell short of becoming the youngest player to get a triple double in NBA history. He did become the youngest player in the Lakers to get at least 10 assists in a game, and eventually he would gain the youngest triple double honor in NBA history, breaking LeBron James’ record by five days. Later in the season, he became one of the few rookies to record multiple triple doubles during the first 20 games of their NBA careers.
Ball also sparked a bit of controversy by choosing his father’s endorsement, Big Baller Brand, instead of one of the three major apparel companies. He chose the endorsement despite offers by Under Armour, Adidas, and Nike. The Big Baller Brand has released Ball’s first shoe entitled ZO2 which had a high price that sparked huge criticism.
For his personal life, apparently no romance is yet in the air for Lonzo. He has two younger brothers who also play basketball. During his free time, he also makes rap songs.
