Leslie was born to Margaret Petit, a dancer on Broadway and Claude Caron a chemist and pharmacist. She took after her mother and pursued an artistic career, firstly as a ballerina. Caron was discovered by Gene Kelly in the “Roland Petit” company, who cast her as his co-star in “An American in Paris” film musical in 1951, and thanks to this, she signed a long-term MGM contract which secured her a series of films, including the same year in “The Man With a Cloak”(1951) co-starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joseph Cotton, and “The Glass Slipper” (1955). She also appeared in successful musicals “Lili”(1953) – receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress – “Daddy Long Legs”(1955) next to Fred Astaire, and “Gigi”(1958). Her later appearance in “The L-Shaped Room” (1962) won her BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, and the Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Apart from her US career, Caron also worked in European films; her later projects included “Father Goose”(1964) in which she starred next to Cary Grant, “Valentino”(1977) in the role of Alla Nazimova, and “Damage”(1992).

Aside from performing, Leslie was a member of the jury at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival’s in 1967 and the 39th Berlin International Film Festival in 1989. During the ‘80s she starred in the “Falcon Crest” TV series, and her later activity includes films such as “Funny Bones”(1995), “The Last of the Blonde Bombshells”(2000), “Chocolat”(2000) and “Le Divorce”(2003). Caron belongs to the small group of actresses from the classic era of MGM who are still actively involved in acting.
