Laurene Powell was born on 6 November 1953, in West Milford, New Jersey USA, and is perhaps best known as the widow of Steve Jobs, but also as an entrepreneur in her own right whose activities have Forbes magazine ranking her as the 45th richest person, and fifth richest woman in the world in 2015.
So just how rich is Laurene PoSteve Jobswell Jobs? Forbes estimates that Laurene’s current net worth is almost $20 billion, with her wealth coming from her interest in Apple and the Steven P. Jobs Trust, which includes about 8% of the shares of the Walt Disney Company – the largest shareholder.

Powell Jobs graduated with BA and BSc degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985, and subsequently with a MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1991. Before business school, Powell Jobs worked for Merrill Lynch Asset Management and spent three years at Goldman Sachs as a fixed-income trading strategist.
Powell Jobs co-founded natural foods company Terravera, selling to retailers in Northern California. She also served on the board of directors of Achieva, a company creating online tools to help students study and prepare for examinations. As an ‘angel investor’, she is a backer and board member of start-up Ozy Media.
Laurene Powell Jobs is no longer involved intimately in profit-making businesses, other than her afore-mentioned investments, but her philanthropic activities are broad ranging, being involved in a myriad of charitable works. In 1997 with Carlos Watson, she co-founded College Track, a non-profit organization which concentrates on assisting so-called “underserved” students improve high school and college graduation rates, with five locations in California, as well as New Orleans and in Colorado, and an impressive success rate in all areas. Powell Jobs also founded the Emerson Collective, an organization that supports social entrepreneurs and organizations working in education and immigration reform, social justice and conservation through partnerships, grants and investments.
Additonally, Powell Jobs is on the advisory board of Udacity, a higher education organisation based in Stanford which provides affordable education. Powell Jobs also sits on the board of directors of College Track, NewSchools Venture Fund, Conservation International, and Stanford University, as well as on the Chairman’s advisory board of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Finally, Laurene is among the top donors to super PAC Ready for Hillary (Clinton), so can expect to be rather busy in that project for the next two years at least.
In her private life, Laurene Powell married Steve Jobs, the co-founder and former-CEO of Apple Inc., in 1991; their son Reed was born September 1991, followed by daughters Erin in 1995 and Eve in 1998. Steve died in 2011. Recently Laurene has been seen in the company of Adrian Fenty, a former mayor of Washington DC.
