He joined a band and since then has been pursuing a career in music. Nevertheless, he matriculated from high school, and also graduated with a degree from the Chungwoon University, and has also enrolled Kongju Communication Arts to study applied music.

In the early 2000s, he worked at his family restaurant as a waiter, and there met the CEO of a new set-up management company. He auditioned for DSP Media, and as a result became a part of the newly formed boyband SS501, which comprised also Heo Young-saeng, Kim Kyu-jong, Park Jung-min and Kim Hyung-jun.

They entered the charts with their debut mini album “Warning” (2005), followed by their second mini album “Snow Prince”, released just five months later. In 2006 they released their first full-length studio album “ST 1 Now”, and became extremely popular in their native country. Then in 2007 they embarked on a tour of Japan, and released their first Japanese single entitled “Kokoro”, and soon received the Newcomer Award by Japan Gold Disc Award. The band was active until 2010, and released two more studio albums – “SS501” in 2007 and “All My Love” in 2009, the sales of which added a lot to Kim’s net worth.

After gaining massive popularity, the members ventured out on their own, including Kim, who released two studio albums “Unlimited” (2012), and “Imademo” (2015), and four EPs, including “Break Down” (2011), and “Lucky” (2011), both topping the charts. Also, he has released material for the Japanese market, including EPs “Kiss Kiss/Lucky Guy” (2012), and “Hot Sun” (2014), which achieved platinum status, increasing his net worth to a large degree.

In 2015 he joined South Korea’s Army to serve for a mandatory period, and was discharged as a Sergeant in February 2017, returning to his musical career. Most recently, he released his fifth EP for the Japanese market, entitled “Kazaguruma -re:wind-“.

Kim and his lawyer managed to have all charges dismissed, and to counter sue his ex-girlfriend. He is apparently still single. Kim was arrested for drunk-driving in 2017, and was fined $1800.

Despite all problems with the law, Kim is also a well-known philanthropist; he has donated to numerous non-profit organizations of his country, including the Red Cross, and has supported numerous causes across Asia, including “Save The Earth Reform Class” environmental campaign, and “Summer Campaign for Senior Citizens Living Alone”, among many other philanthropic endeavors.
