He is the son of a pioneer of American country music singing cowboy Tex Ritter and actress Dorothy Fay. John had an elder brother named Thomas ‘Tom’ Matthews. Regarding his education, he went to Hollywood High School, where he was student body president, then enrolled into the University of Southern California, and majored in Psychology. He had a plan to pursue a career in politics but eventually changed his mind and joined the USC School of Dramatic Arts, where he became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity; he graduated in 1970.

John Ritter launched his career by making a guest appearance as Coley Smith in an episode of the ABC drama series “Dan August” in 1970. His debut feature film appearance came the folowing year ,when he played Roger in the Disney comedy film “The Barefoot Executive”. His big break was in the CBS historical drama series “The Waltons”, in which he landed the recurring role of Rev. Matthew Fordwick from 1972 until 1976 ,when he left the show to play Jack Tripper in the highly popular ABC sitcom “Three’s Company” – the American version of the British sitcom “Man About The House” – which lasted for eight seasons through 1984.

He shared the screen with Janet Wood and Chrissy Show, in the series which gained him worldwide recognition ,and his performance earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy. He then reprised the role in its short spin-off series, entitled “Three’s A Crown” (1984-1985).

Continued Success

John Ritter’s next major role came when he was selected to play Detective Harry Hooperman in the ABC comedy-drama series “Hooperman”, which was broadcast from 1987 to 1989.

For his work on the show, he was nominated for both a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy. He also won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Male Performer in a New TV Program. In 1990, he then portrayed Ben Hanscom in the critically acclaimed ABC two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s “It”, and took the role of Ben in the dark comedy film “Problem Child”, which he later reprised in its first sequel “Problem Child 2” (1991). Further Work

From 2000 to 2003, John Ritter provided his voice to the title character in the PBS Kids animated educational children’s series “Clifford The Big Red Dog”, for which he received four Daytime Emmy Award nominations in the category of Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. He reprised the role in three video games based on the show, entitled “Clifford The Big Red Dog: Learning Activities”, “Clifford The Big Red Dog: Musical Memory Games”, and “Clifford The Big Red Dog: Clifford The Big Red Dog: Phonics”. While filming it, he also played Mr. Andrew Covington in The WB’s drama series “Felicity” (2000-2002), after which he featured in the role of Paul Hennessy in the ABC sitcom “8 Simple Rules” from 2002 to 2003.

He died from an aortic dissection on 11 September 2003 at the age of 54.
