John C. Malone is the son of Daniel L. Malone, an engineer, and is of Irish heritage. Malone went to Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut, and matriculated in 1959, then studied at Yale University and graduated in 1963, with a BA in electrical engineering and economics. A year later, Malone graduated from John Hopkins University with an MS in industrial management. John Malone also received his Ph.D. in operations research from John Hopkins in 1967.
Soon after getting a diploma at Yale in 1963, Malone started his career at Bell Telephone Laboratories of AT&T. Five years later, he joined McKinsey & Company, and became Group Vice President at General Instrument Corporation (GI) in 1970. Malone was one of the most successful presidents and CEOs of Tele-Communication Inc. in its history, staying at the post for 24 years, from 1973 to 1996. At that time, he was quite wealthy, and that position added a significant amount of money to his net worth.

Malone was a Director of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) for three years (1974-1977), and again during a second stint (1980-1993).
