John Fox grew up in San Diego, California and went to the Castle Park High School in Chula Vista, where he played football. Later, Fox studied at San Diego State University, and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education. He played as a defensive back while there, and upon graduation, John signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he never made it to the NFL.
Instead, Fox joined San Diego State as a graduate assistant in 1978, and a year later got a job as a new defensive backs coach for the US International University.
