Dunsworth grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, along with his nine siblings. He attended the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, majoring in Theatre. However, he dropped out of college in his fourth year. He went on to land gigs in numerous CBC radio dramas, as well as leading parts in various stage productions at the Neptune Theater in Halifax. In 1970 he leased a run-down building in Halifax, to turn it into what would eventually become the first and most successful alternative theater company in the city, Pier One Theatre. In 1987, he founded Filmworks Casting, and began working as a casting director, quickly achieving a reputation. By the end of the ’80s, he had appeared in films such as “The Last Dog Drive”, “Deep Sea Conspiracy” and “Justice Denied”. His net worth started to rise.

In the mid-’90s, director Mike Clattenburg cast Dunsworth in his short film “One Last Shot”; what was initially a small role grew into a leading one, earning the actor a Best Performance award from the Atlantic Film Festival, and considerably adding to his wealth. The role would eventually turn into the character of Jim Lahey in the “Trailer Park Boys” series. Dunsworth also appeared in several other films of the ’90s, including “Buried on Sunday”, “Life with Billy” and “New Waterford Girl”.

In 2001 he was cast in Clattenburg’s mockumentary television series “Trailer Park Boys”, to play the character of frequently drunk trailer park supervisor Jim Lahey. He remained in the show for seven seasons, until 2008, and his performance as Lahey brought him an astonishing popularity with audiences around the world, considerably contributing to his net worth.

Meanwhile, in 2002 he played a local cop in the indie family drama film “Virginia’s Run”. The following year saw him in the CBC film “Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion”, which portrayed the Halifax Explosion that took place in 1971. Other roles he took during this time were in the films “The Shipping News”, “Lift-Off”, “Serious Miracles” and “A Bug and a Bag of Weed”, along with a number of television films. He also appeared in several television series, including the mini-series “Trudeau” and “Trudeau II: Maverick in the Making”. His net worth rose consistently.

Dunsworth reprized his role of Lahey in the 2006 film “Trailer Park Boys: The Movie”, which eventually developed into a cult film with two sequels – the 2009 “Countdown to Liquor Day” and the 2014 “Don’t Legalize It” – additionally reinforcing his popularity and improving his wealth.

In 2010, the actor was cast as the mysterious reporter Dave Teagues in the SyFy supernatural drama television series “Haven”, based on Stephen King’s novel “The Colorado”. He played the role for five seasons until 2015, gaining further positive reviews and greatly improving his fortune.

Meanwhile, he tackled a mix of other television and film work, appearing in films such as “Cloudburst”, “Take This Waltz” and “Santa Quest”, and in the TV series “The Drunk and On Drugs Happy Funtime Hour” and “Forgive Me”. Dunsworth has also continued to played Lahey in the new seasons of “Trailer Park Boys” series.

Speaking about his private life, Dunsworth is a married man – wife somewhat anonymous – having four children, with two of his three daughters, Molly and Sarah, being actresses. His family resides in Nova Scotia.
