Joel Hans Embiid, born on the 16th of March, 1994, is a Cameroonian professional basketball player, who rose to fame as one of the members of the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Born in Yaounde, Cameroon, Embiid is the son of Thomas Embiid, a military officer, and Christine. He has always been a sports enthusiast and was even set to play professional volleyball in Europe, but at the age of fifteen, he started playing organized basketball, and was eventually discovered in a basketball camp by Luc Mbah a Moute, a former NBA player and fellow Cameroonian himself, Mbah a Moute helped him move to the United States to become a professional basketball player.

Unfortunately, after signing with the 76ers, Embiid suffered a bone-related injury to his foot that caused him to miss most of the games in the 2014-2015 season. In 2016, he recovered from his injuries and was able to play, even being named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for January 16 to 22.
In early 2017, Embiid experienced another injury, on his left knee, which caused him to miss most of the rest of the 2016-2017 season, but before the season ended he recovered, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team, and subsequently he signed a five-year contract extension with the 76ers worth $148 million, with the ability to earn an additional $30 million, provided that he earns an All-NBA first-, second- or third-team selection or is named MVP for 2017-2018 season; this extension was a huge help in his income.
