Roth attended Boston University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication. Prior to his Hollywood career, Joe worked in an advertising company in San Francisco. He started off his career in the movie industry as a production assistant in ‘’The Conversation’’, a 1974 mystery thriller film. He went on to work as a producer in several movies during the mid and late ‘70s, including ‘’Cracking Up’’ and ‘’Americathon’’, a 1979 American comedy movie. He had a lot on his plate and the number of movies he produced was only increasing, producing 16 movies in total during the ‘80s, with his work receiving mixed reviews from the critics. The highlight of this era was ‘’Off Beat’’, which was described as ‘’one of the year’s best comedies’’ by The Chicago Sun critic Roger Ebert. Following this success, Roth went on to produce ‘’Skin Deep’’, which despite poor reviews, was a hit at the box office earning a total of $19.7 million. In the same year, he was a co-producer of ‘’The Major League’’, a widely recognized sports comedy film, which was a success at the box office, besides gaining a positive response from the critics. However, his most notable movie of the ‘90s was ‘’The Exorcist III’’, a 1990 horror film, which grossed a total of $39 million, including over $9 million earned in the opening week. In the same fashion, Roth produced movies that did well at the box office, but failed to impress the critics in the forthcoming period. However, he was gaining recognition for his work and became chairman of Caravan Pictures and the Walt Disney Studios.

Having split up with Disney and 20th Century Fox, Joe went on to found Revolution studios in 2000, for which he produced ‘’Daddy Day Care’’ in 2003 and ‘’Mona Lisa Smile’’ in the same year among others, and so was ranked as high as number six in Premiere Magazine’s 2003 Hollywood Power List. Roth produced the 76th Annual Academy Awards in 2004, alongside working on several movie projects. The number of movies he produced was notably increasing throughout the 2000s, and he was widely applauded for his work on “Alice in Wonderland” in 2007 and ‘’”Snow White and the Huntsman”’’ in 2012, with the latter grossing over $396 million.

As of more recent past, Joe produced ‘’Maleficent’’, a 2014 dark fantasy starring Angelina Jolie which earned over $758 million, and was one of the highest grossing movies of the year. Roth is still working in the movie industry, and in 2017 he produced a box office hit ‘’xXx The Return of Xander Cage’’.
