Jo Koy is the son of a European-American father who was in the US Air Force, and a Filipino mother. Koy went to Spanaway Lake High School before switched it for Foss High School in Tacoma. He studied at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but quit to pursue his career as a stand-up comedian.
Las Vegas was his first step, where he started working at a comedy club in 1994. Koy was a regular on the open-mic at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, in the show called Catch a Rising Star. He was spotted by an agent while performing in Las Vegas, and was offered a job on BET’s Comic View, and Koy worked there for two seasons in the mid-90’s. During the late 90’s and the early 2000’s, Koy appeared in numerous TV specials such as “Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza!”, The Montreal comedy festival “Just For Laughs”, but his most notable appearance was in 2005 when he was on the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”.
