After three successful seasons in University football, Jim declared for the 1999 NFL Draft and ended up being selected by the Minnesota Vikings as the 44th pick overall. In his rookie season, Jim was used as a tight end and played in 13 games, catching 6 passes for 13 yards. His numbers began slowly to improve, and in 2003 had the best season in his entire career with 401 receiving yards and four touchdowns, from 46 caught passes. From 2005 until the end of his career, Jim played in every game for the Vikings, becoming known for his durability. Also, he helped Adrian Peterson on his way to a successful career, thanks to Jim’s blocking skills. Although he played in every game in the last seven seasons of his career, Jim’s offensive contribution staggered and declined, but his blocks and defensive plays helped the whole team. Thanks to his successful plays, Jim signed several contracts with the Vikings over the years, including one from 2009, worth $9 million over three years, which added a substantial amount to his wealth.

He retired with 192 receptions, 1,688 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. He also achieved 147 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
