Cantore was brought-up in White River Junction, Vermont. He graduated from Lyndon State College in 1986, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology. Right upon his graduation, in July the same year, The Weather Channel hired him and Jim has spent his entire career working for his first employer. During his long and active television career, he has become one of the most popular TV faces and accumulated a significant sum of money. He is well known and complimented for his ability to “translate” complicated weather events into simple language that an average viewer can understand, making him an even more recognizable figure to the public.

Although best known for his live reports on major weather events, Cantore’s area of work has expanded to other fields, such as developing the “Fall Foliage Forecast” which was very well accepted by the public. In fact, his career is so successful that he has been referred to as a “rock star of meteorologists” by Algis Laukaitis in the Lincoln Journal Star. His professionalism was shown once again during an incident in January 2014, when he was attacked by a student while live reporting at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina – Jim didn’t lose his focus and continued to report normally.

Apart from his reports for TWC, Jim has reported other significant events such as the Space Shuttle Discovery launch, PGA tournaments, NFL games, the “Winter X Games” and many more. He is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society, and in 2002 he was awarded the NOAA- David S. Johnson Award for his innovative use of environmental satellite technology.

Another one of his activities includes being a narrator on the TWC series “Storm Stories”. He was also hosting weather segments for NBC during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Jim’s connection to TWC brought him not only professional but also personal success, as it was here that he met his wife Tamra Cantore. The couple married in 1990 in Vermont and have a daughter and a son. However, it wasn’t until the birth of their children that Jim found out that his wife suffers from Parkinson’s disease and both their children have Fragile X syndrome. This led Cantore to dedicate himself to charity work concerned with both diseases. However, Jim divorced Tamra in 2009, and has been dating Andrea Butera since 2010. Apart from this he is devoted to Make-a-Wish Foundation events, and served as a celebrity cabinet member with the American Red Cross.
