Early life, family and education

Jacob grew up in Los Angeles alongside his older brother. He became interested in acting at an early age, appearing in his first TV commercial at the age of five. His interest was sparked by his parents, Gerald and Debra Hopkins, who were both in the acting business before him. They’ve been very supportive of Jacob since his earliest days in the industry; his mother was essentially his manager, and first took him to auditions, while his father coached him in acting lessons.

Jacob made his film debut in the 2007 sports comedy “The Minis”, written and directed by Valerio Zanoli, and which starred the former NBA (National Basketball Association) player, Dennis Rodman. Four years later, he played the role of an unnamed boy in the action adventure fantasy blockbuster “Priest”, centered on a catholic priest who disobeys church law to hunt down the vampires who’ve kidnapped his niece.

Since 2013, Jacob has played the supporting character Chad Kremp, in the popular period sitcom “The Goldbergs”. The series was created by Adam F. Jacob’s first voiceover role was in the popular animated series “The Amazing World of Gumball”, in which he voiced the main protagonist, Gumball Watterson. He was 11 years old when he landed the role, cast to replace the previous voice actor, Logan Grove. Jacob voiced Gumball for four seasons through 2017, and then replaced by Nicolas Cantu, as his voice had changed due to puberty.

“The Amazing World of Gumball” was created by Ben Bocquelet for Cartoon Network, and aired for six seasons, from 3 May 2011, to 24 June 2019. The plot centers on a blue cat called Gumball, his adoptive brother Darwin, and their goldfish friend. “Gumball” is known for its quirky and intentionally disjointed animation style, as well as for its extensive references to popular culture.

It was well received by the public and critics alike, has developed a cult following, and has won 16 awards, including two BAFTAs in 2011 and 2018.

In early 2021, he voiced the main character Fushi, in the English version of the anime series “To Your Eternity”, centered on a lonely boy and his wolf, wandering through the Arctic regions of North America. In a recent interview, Jacob has revealed that it’s one of his favorite roles, and that doing voiceovers for an anime has been on his bucket list for a long time. “To Your Eternity” is currently airing on Crunchyroll and HBO Max.

Love life and relationships

In 2017 and 2018, Jacob was in a relationship with the fellow actress Merit Leighton, who is perhaps known best for her voiceover roles in animated series such as “She-Ra and the Princess” and “Sofia the First”.

The two met while filming “The Nerd Posse”, which they both starred in. Since their breakup, Jacob has not talked about his love life in public.

In 2021, he was spotted in Arizona spending time with his “Carolina’s Calling” co-star Savanah Moss, which sparked rumors about them possibly dating. However, it seems that their relationship is strictly friendly at the moment.

Hobbies and interesting facts

Jacob’s very first TV appearance was in a Kmart commercial, alongside the actress Jaclyn Smith. At the time, Jacob had no idea who Jaclyn was, while his mother was very excited to meet her.
