Jack Nicklaus’ father Charlie was an all-round sportsman, who had played college and semi-pro American football, as well as tennis and golf – off scratch. Jack studied at Upper Arlington High School, where he played basketball, tennis, baseball and football quite successfully. Jack began playing golf when he was only 10 years old, at the “Scioto Country Club”, where he met his future golf instructor, Jack Grout. Soon Jack started participating in championships and won many of them. When Jack began attending Ohio State University he still continued playing, and winning championships, including the US Amateur twice(1959, 1961), and an NCAA Championship(1961), being one of the youngest champions. At the US Open in 1960 Jack finishing second by two strokes to Arnold Palmer, shooting 282, which remains the lowest ever by an amateur in the US Open.

Despite playing selectively to avoid ‘burn-out’, Jack won 73 tournaments overall, still third on the all-time list.

In 1990 Jack joined the “Senior PGA tour”, but despite being 50 years old, he was still able to win tournaments. In 2005 Nicklaus decided to end his professional career, and concentrate on golf course designing, and in addition to this, Jack has written such books as “My Story” and “Golf My Way”. #Quote
1When I was fifteen years old I was playing with my father and I hit an eight-iron into a trap, and the club went right into the trap after the ball. My father said, 'Young man, that'll be the last club you'll throw or the last hole you'll play if I have anything to say about it.' He got his message across.
