He grew up in his hometown, where his parents owned a plant nursery, and where he went to Redlands High School, After matriculating, he enrolled at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, where he studied landscape architecture and environmental science. After graduation he became a student at the University of Minnesota, from which he obtained a Master of Architecture degree in Urban Planning, and then a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1969. Before co-starting ESRI, Jack worked in the school’s Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis, which was a predecessor of ESRI’s ARC/INFO GIS software.

Then the same year, he and his wife Laura, teamed up to start ESRI, firstly for performing land use analysis, but soon the firm expanded into other aspects, including GIS Software development.

Since the start, the firm has grown to 10 regional offices in the US, and a network of 80+ international distributors, with about a million users in 200 countries. The company has 3200 employees in the US, and its revenues have grown every year since inception. According to reports, in 2016 firm revenues amassed $1.1 billion, which significantly increased Jack’s net worth.

Thanks to his success in research in particular, Jack has received 13 honorary doctoral degrees from Universities across the world. Also, he has been awarded numerous prestigious accolades, including Horwood Distinguished Service Award of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, which was given to him in 1988, then an Anderson Medal of the Association of American Geographers in 1998, Carl Mannerfelt Gold Medal of the International Cartographic Association in 2007, and most recently Audubon Medal of the National Audubon Society in 2015.

Regarding his personal life, Jack has been married to Laura since the 1960s, and the couple has one child together.
