After graduation he became a student at the University of Minnesota, from which he obtained a Master of Architecture degree in Urban Planning, and then a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1969. Before co-starting ESRI, Jack worked in the school’s Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis, which was a predecessor of ESRI’s ARC/INFO GIS software.
Then the same year, he and his wife Laura, teamed up to start ESRI, firstly for performing land use analysis, but soon the firm expanded into other aspects, including GIS Software development.
