Early life and education

Lucas was born to Molly Jeanne, a nurse, and Dave Alan Cruikshank, who works as an executive engineer. Lucas has two brothers, Jacob and Ethan, who are also YouTubers, and five sisters. He comes from a diverse ethnic background, having Scottish, German and Irish heritage.

Lucas got his start as a YouTuber during his teenage years, first posting videos with his cousins, Jon and Katie, on the YouTube channel called JLK Productions. Along the way, he started developing his Fred Figglehorn character, which turned out to be widely popular.

This prompted Lucas to launch a separate YouTube channel entirely dedicated to Fred, in April 2008. By early 2009, it had already amassed more than a million subscribers, becoming the first YouTube channel to reach that milestone. Despite receiving exceptionally negative reviews from the critics, the movie became a huge commercial success, with its TV premiere drawing a total of almost eight million viewers.

In 2011, a sequel entitled “Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred” premiered on Nickelodeon, drawing more than 5.7 million viewers. In 2012, the third and final installment in the “Fred” movie franchise, entitled “Fred 3: Camp Fred” saw its release, receiving overall more positive reviews, but attracting slightly lower viewership compared to its predecessors.

In the same year, Lucas starred in the Nickelodeon comedy series “Fred: The Show”, which consisted of 24 episodes.

In 2014, Lucas retired his Fred character, and opened his YouTube channel to anyone who wanted to post family-friendly videos, such as sketches, music videos and animations. However, the idea wasn’t well received by Lucas’ audience, and he ultimately stopped uploading videos to the channel altogether as of July 2015.

Through his YouTube career, Lucas has collaborated with numerous brands, such as Zipit, and has also promoted the movies “City of Ember”, “Year One” and “Adventures of Power”. As of January 2022, FRED YouTube channel numbers close to three million subscribers, and more than 1.3 billion views.

From 2013 through 2014, Lucas was joined by the fellow YouTuber, Jennifer Vial, with whom he posted videos onto this channel, which he briefly renamed to Lucas and Jenny, but later reverted to making videos alone. Although Lucas quit making videos for his original channel in 2015, he still regularly posts videos onto his second channel, which now numbers more than three million subscribers, and almost 300 million views.

TV appearances

In 2009, Lucas made a guest appearance as Fred, in an episode of the Nickelodeon show “iCarly”, as well as the widely popular Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana”. In the following year, he was one of the show presenters of that year’s edition of Kids’ Choice Awards, and in 2011, he hosted the Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards.

In 2012 and 2013, he starred as the lead character Marvin, in the Nickelodeon children’s sitcom “Marvin Marvin”, centered on an alien boy, having to adjust to his new life as a human.

Despite its popularity, the series ended after Lucas’ departure from Nickelodeon.
