Dannielynn’s mother, Anna Nicole Smith, died from an accidental drug overdose five months following Dannielyn’s birth -.almost immediately, Dannielynn became the subject of a paternity case which four men contested – Larry Birkhead, Howard Stern, Alexander Denk and Frederic von Anhalt. After the test, it was determined that Larry Birkhead is Dannielynn’s father; at first, Howard K. Stern was named as the father on Dannielynn’s birth certificate, and at her birth was named Hannah Rose Marshall Stern. Her birth certificate was the subject of another dispute, as she received the second certificate on 11 October 2006, a month after her birth, when her biological father changed her surname to his last name.

Larry Birkhead and Anna Nicole Smith were together when she became pregnant with their child. However, as their relationship was unpredictable and the two often argued, she left him six months into pregnancy. However, Larry was concerned both for Anna and his unborn child and had to find a way to be close to his daughter. He was certain that he was the child’s father, and thus he joined in the paternity case, determined to strip Howard K. Stern of paternity.
