Adu’s family moved to Rockville, Maryland when he was eight years old where he enrolled at Sequoyah Elementary School. Soon after, he was noticed by a local soccer coach and began to play football. Adu also attended The Heights School for several years. By the time he turned 14, Freddy had become the youngest American ever to sign a professional contract in a major league in any team sport, namely with D.C. United who chose him as the number one overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. Later that same year, he won the MLS Cup title, and became the youngest player ever to appear in US professional sports when he came on in United’s game against the San Jose Earthquakes, in April 2004 and just a few days later he scored his first professional goal, becoming the youngest player in MLS history to do that. Adu was then nominated for FIFPRO young player of the year in 2005.

The following year Freddy was traded along with the team’s goalkeeper to Real Salt Lake. Meantime, he was the captain of the U-20 United States men’s national team in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, making an impressive showing after which his rights were secured by Benfica, Portugal. In July the same year, Benfica transferred Adu to their club, which later loaned him to four other clubs during his contract, all helping his growing net worth.

In 2011, Freddy returned to Major League Soccer where he signed with Philadelphia Union, and two years later he joined the Brazilian Bahia club from which he was released later that year. From that period on, Adu had numerous unsuccessful trials around the Europe, eventually signing with Serbian club FK Jagodina in July 2014, but appearing only once in their first-team. He was released by the club in November that year.

Adu has played in five international youth tournaments: the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship, the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2008 Summer Olympics. However, it seems that although he was at first seen as “the new Pele”, Freddy unfortunately just didn’t manage to live up to these expectations.

When it comes to his personal life, Adu dated r’n’b singer JoJo from May 2005 to September 2006, but even after the couple split, JoJo mentioned in an interview that they were still good friends. Reportedly, he has been dating Shadia Simmons since April 2008.
