Adu’s family moved to Rockville, Maryland when he was eight years old where he enrolled at Sequoyah Elementary School. Soon after, he was noticed by a local soccer coach and began to play football. Adu also attended The Heights School for several years. By the time he turned 14, Freddy had become the youngest American ever to sign a professional contract in a major league in any team sport, namely with D.C. United who chose him as the number one overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. Later that same year, he won the MLS Cup title, and became the youngest player ever to appear in US professional sports when he came on in United’s game against the San Jose Earthquakes, in April 2004 and just a few days later he scored his first professional goal, becoming the youngest player in MLS history to do that. In 2011, Freddy returned to Major League Soccer where he signed with Philadelphia Union, and two years later he joined the Brazilian Bahia club from which he was released later that year.
